Frederic Gerchambeau - Ars Sequentia (2009)

Frederic Gerchambeau, a specialist in synthesis techniques, a researcher in sound modulation and an explorer of impossible sequences, the musician of the Lille region, who in the mid-90s produced  excellent Berlin school influenced music, has been involved for several years in modular synthesizers. "Ars Sequentia" is written with a eurorack modular synthesizer system. Musically is very simple but very attractive at the same time. Little exists in the internet about him and most of his albums are hard to find.

Morton Subotnick - Silver Apples Of The Moon, The Wild Bull (1867, 1968)

Silver Apples of the Moon was Morton Subotnick's first full-length LP, the first piece of classical music commissioned by a record company, which was composed in 1967 specifically for release on Nonesuch/Elektra. Subotnick took the name from Yeats's poem The Song of Wandering Aengus."The silver apples of the moon, the golden apples of the sun." As Subotnick says, "It doesn't really mean anything. I just liked the sound of it."Morton Subotnick's Silver Apples of the Moon, was the first album of all-electronic music. Released in 1967, it found favor with electronics geeks, as well as legions of stoners who soaked in its mind-blowing sounds. It was made with a "Buchla" analogue synthesizer , made by Don Buchla. It remains untill today, one of the most influencial albums of electronic music.
Based on an ancient Sumerian poem, Morton Subotnick's "The Wild Bull" , is no less an adventurous sonic trip on the Buchla synthesizer.

Bebe & Louis Barron - Forbidden Planet, Bells Of Atlantis (1956, 1952)

Bebe Barron (June 16, 1925 – April 20, 2008) and Louis Barron (April 23, 1920 – November 1, 1989) were two American pioneers in the field of electronic music. They are credited with writing the first electronic music for magnetic tape, and the first entirely electronic film score for the MGM movie Forbidden Planet (1956). The soundtrack for Forbidden Planet (1956) is today recognized as the first entirely electronic score for a film. Eerie and sinister, the soundtrack was unlike anything that audiences had heard before. Music historians have often noted how groundbreaking the soundtrack was in the development of electronic music
Aside from the tape recorders, most of the equipment in the studio was completely built by Louis. One of the home made pieces was a monstrous speaker which could produce very heavy bass. Electronic oscillators that produced sawtooth, sine, and square waves were also home built prize possessions. They had a filter, a spring reverberator, and several tape recorders. The Stancil-Hoffmann reel to reel was custom built by the inventor for looping the samples, and changing their speed. The thriving business brought in enough income to purchase some commercial equipment.
"Bells Of Atlantis" is a film from 1952, much earlier than "Forbidden Planet". The Barrons scored three of Ian Hugo's short experimental films based on the writings of his wife Anaïs Nin. The most notable of these three films were Bells of Atlantis (1952) and Jazz of Lights (1954).
The soundtrack of "Forbidden Planet" was a major influence to composer and director John Carpenter.
This post is dedicated to the fans of  the lovely blog "A Closet Of Curiosities" . I will post some more albums of electronic music from this blog.
